John M. Snyder is a sculptor who uses traditional machinists' tools to breath new life and unexpected beauty into discarded mechanical objects. I had an hour or more with him in his Upper West side studio to watch him prepare the "ingredients" for his latest project.
Snyder, seen here reflected in what will act as a solar panel for his new creation, likes having all his raw materials visible when he works...
...even if it means tearing open a discarded, oil-filled elevator part.
Snyder holds one of his gems made from parts once concealed within the bowels of machines.
